Emergency

Passport gone

  1. Search everything first. Be certain.
  2. Police station. Get a report with a reference number.
  3. Your embassy's emergency line. Ask for the fastest option.
  4. Your insurer. Give them the police reference.
  5. Ask what the emergency document actually permits.

Medical

  1. Life-threatening: nearest hospital now. Ask your accommodation which one.
  2. Serious but not immediate: call your insurance line first, let them direct you.
  3. Manageable: pharmacy or walk-in clinic. Your own kit first.

Flight cancelled

  1. Ask: within your control, or extraordinary circumstances?
  2. Photograph the departure board. Keep every boarding pass.
  3. Ask explicitly for meals, drinks, and a hotel if overnight.
  4. Ask for refund or rerouting, including on another airline.
  5. File the compensation claim afterwards, in writing.

No access to money

  1. Your backup card, stored somewhere other than your wallet.
  2. Your bank's international line.
  3. Your insurance emergency line.
  4. The person at home you arranged this with.
  5. Your embassy last. They do not give out money.
